The data portal provides us with a powerful tool for presenting our diverse media. In addition, we are developing various storytelling formats to present our media appropriately to various target groups. Both offers make an essential contribution to the research data infrastructure at the Museum für Naturkunde and enable fair re-use of our research content for science, education, culture, and society.
Media in the Data Portal
The Data Portal is not exclusively aimed at the scientific community but also specifically at the wider public. Since early 2021, it has offered future-oriented access to the digital media of the collection, the historical division, and the library. It is continuously being filled with additional data sets.
Many media sets are available under a free license and can thus be integrated into your projects. Various search options allow for a target group specific access. Search results can be narrowed down according to taxonomic terms, locations and keywords, or by an image search according to specific colors.
Via an application programming interface, almost all data can be queried automatically and integrated into your mashups or artificial intelligence applications.
Storytelling
Behind our media there are many stories that want to be told. That’s why we use a wide variety of storytelling formats to give individual media the context they need to be placed in space and time and in order to be understood and appreciated. In doing so, we don’t just rely on purely digital formats but also use hybrid models.
For example, we developed an augmented reality app that is tailor-made for the museum’s historic bird hall. The application’s content is a complex narrative structure that was created in close collaboration with different experts at the Museum für Naturkunde. The app allowed for an entirely new approach and access to the hall, which is otherwise closed to visitors.
